The murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd cut us to the bone. As part of the education community, we know they are visible, recent inhumanities in a cycle of countless intolerable inhumanities that are the result of the systemic racism that shapes the lives of students of color.
Educators across the country work every day to break the cycle of systemic racism and have helped create change, but there is more to be done. By working to increase access to learning opportunities for all students, we hope to bring more students and educators together as they fight to create a safer, more compassionate, and more equitable future for people of color.
Education is vital to breaking a culture that empowers racism. The students, families, and communities we serve deserve nothing less than conscious, on-going work to dismantle structural and systemic racism. As part of our work, we commit ourselves to raising up voices of educators and researchers of color to help create the necessary change this history calls for.
